into the woods

I press my ears to the wet ground, and listen to the song of the brown earth,
My heart pounds my chest, the exertion of having run far too long
Now it slows down, falling into step with the dulcet sounds of the woods

Hush, now,
I hear the leafless branches whisper silent secrets to the fog
The mist weaves in and out of the trees, playing peekaboo

I inhale the thick, sweet scent of sweat and rain and mud
Mesmerizing, yet invigorating
Like a playful tease, coaxing, tempting,

My heartbeat starts to flutter, a wild spirit has been set free
And once again I run, deeper and deeper into the woods
For, at last, I have found my way home …
