tales for dreamers: adrift

What's the point of driftwood? What purpose does its existence serve? Perhaps there is something to be learnt from its state of constant buoyancy.

It’s my birthday this month, and I have a wish to make.

They say you shouldn’t speak your wishes out loud for that would keep them from coming true.

But then, they don’t really say what would make them come true.

So I think they, whoever they are, only speak in half-truths and incomplete wisdom. It’s best to ignore them and do as I please. I’m prepared to face the consequences, whatever they may be.

So, dear ones, this is my birthday wish.

To be adrift.

To bob on the waves of life like driftwood.

With no recollection of the past, no memories of the tree I originated from. With no destination to head towards, no desperation to get to one particular place or the other.

Nothing to keep me tethered to anything or any place or anyone.

But simply bobbing on the water.

Placing no demands on the waves either. It would be alright if they wished to be gentle. It would also be alright if they came at me, frothing at their crests, ready to devour me.

For you see, it would be in my nature to be light and buoyant. I’d be impossible to submerge. That would be my superpower.

Of course, the waves could splinter me into pieces, but each fragment of me would be just like me.

Light. Insubstantial. Impossible to be weighed down without consistent, sufficient external pressure.

The waves are too restless to keep me pinned down for too long.

Every fragment of me would remain afloat. No matter what.

Every part of me would throb with the joy of being present, alive, and drifting.

Not wishing I were anywhere but here, doing anything else but drifting, being anyone else but adrift.

Because acceptance is not a sign of helplessness or defeat. It is the utmost wisdom.
