tales for dreamers: new caretakers in charge
The owners of this home have appointed new caretakers to keep out the pesky neighbourhood kids. How good do you think these miniature creatures likely are at their job? Read this short fantasy tale, a quirky and whimsical flash fiction piece, to find out.
The neighbourhood kids have only grown more and more unruly over the years, so the homeowners have hired new caretakers to keep watch.
The new hires are reputedly so good that the owners sometimes even leave their windows open when no one’s at home.
Why they chose child-sized skeletons is anybody’s guess, but word on the street is that these guards are mightier than they look.
They don’t really do much other than hanging by the door (literally) all day long. You could walk up to the door and ring the bell, even push the door open if it’s ajar, and the skeletons won’t even bat an eyelid. (Not that they have eyelids in the first place, but you get my drift).
But come night time, and it’s a different story altogether.
That’s when the skeletons come to life and roam the neighbourhood, quite like those unruly kids themselves.
If you were one of those who broke into the house, they’ll pay you a visit at night. They’ll jump over the fence of your backyard, scale the walls of your home, climb into your bedroom through the window, and snuggle under your covers.
There they’ll lie patiently, waiting for you to jolt awake from a nightmare (which they conveniently snuck into your head when you were dreaming), and grin at you in the way only skeletons can.
And when you close your eyes and scream your head off, waiting for someone to run up and rescue you from this real-life nightmare, they’ll simply go back the way they came — out the window, down the wall, over the backyard fence — and take their rightful place by the door of their employer’s home, patiently waiting for the next victim to come to the door.
This is how they keep their otherwise mundane job interesting and fun.
Last week's image info: 'The head with two faces' waits for you at the St. Thomas Elevated Park. If you make your way there to seek it out, let the faces know I sent you. They'll indulge you in very interesting conversations if you keep an open mind and an open heart.
